Both our senior sides carried on our tradition of an away day during preseason as we both took on opposition in the shape of Holywell Town FC in North Wales. The Welsh Alliance team have scored some good wins pre-season, beating our friends at Caernarfon Town and NWCFL outfit Cammell Laird. There was to be no shocks on Saturday though, with our Manchester League side running out 0-4 winners with goals from Ash Ainsworth, player-manager Matthew Edge, and possibly the pick of the bunch from Jamie Wolden, who finished after rounding the home side's keeper.
The first team were equally comfortable but didn't get the goals to show for a dominating first 45 minutes. Liam Ellis gave us the lead from the spot, and then Adam Latham twice and Louis Potts both went close to increasing the lead. Missed chances always come to bite you back, and true to form, Holywell equalised early in the 2nd half with a well worked goal down our right hand side, and then a simple finish at close range to make it 1-1. That seemed to wake us up and we pressed for a goal to give us the lead back, and that arrived in the 65th minute with a perfectly flighted header from player/coach Mike Norton who was on as a substitute. That was the scoring over for the day, and another 90 minutes under the belt as we prepare for the visit of Longridge Town on August 3rd. A big thanks to everyone who travelled to watch the game and Charlie and Harvey who helped out as usual. Next up now is a home game v Mossley AFC this coming Wednesday KO 8pm £2/£1. All support for the lads will be appreciated.
