On a shocker of a day weather wise, torrential rain and a gale, we saw our FA Cup run end at the first hurdle in a crazy 45 minutes in which the lead changed hands several times. We started brightly and Ant Hough hit the bar in the first few minutes, but Litherland then scored 2 quick goals, including a chip from some distance out, to see themselves in a seemingly comfortable 0-2 lead. We hit back though, first through a Liam Ellis penalty and then a first Avro's goal for Adam Latham, before a the pick of the bunch from Ryan Hanson who went on a great run which was matched by a superb strike through the Litherland keepers legs. 3-2. We'd seemed to turn the corner, but Litherland came again and seemed to cause us to panic a bit at the back, another 2 quick goals saw them lead 3-4 at the break. In the second half, the Liverpool team used all their experience to break up the game, and deny us the chance to get any rhythm going at all. Chances for both sides were few and far between, and the referee's book was out every few minutes for Avros players who got sucked into the tactics of the Merseysiders. Mike Norton's entry in the 80th minute sparked a revival and he was desperately unlucky not to level the game with seconds left, but it wasn't to be and it was Litherland who go on to play Sheffield FC in the next round. It's a steep learning curve at the moment at this level as we are all finding out.
