MATCHDAY 4 | AFC DARWEN 1 AVRO FC 4 | 15.08.18 | ANCHOR GROUND
Can he do it on a wet Wednesday in Darwen ? Well if you’re Avro FC the answer is yes ! We had a great win on Wednesday night in difficult conditions up in Lancashire. The lads refusing to be bullied out of the game and after a slow start got back in the groove and deservedly got the 3 points. On a night when many of the NWCFL committee were watching from the stand, it was a game that had everything from the first minute to the last.
We got off to the worst possible start as we went a goal down after only 30 seconds. We lost the ball in midfield and Darwen striker Yahha Saeed raced away and finished neatly to give us a mountain to climb straightaway. We looked shellshocked by the goal, and we struggled to get ourselves back into our usual game, that said we did come back and after only 3 minutes, a foul on michael norton in the box led to a penalty which Norts himself stepped up and put away – his 3rd Avro goal in 4 games. Bit by bit we were finding our way back into the game on a very slippy surface due to the constant rain throughout the game. Kane Wallwork went close on 17 minutes with a shot that went just over, and 3 minutes later a Vinny Howell cross was met by Sam Rathbone but went just wide. It wasn’t just all us though, it was a real end to end game, and AFC Darwen forced a great point blank save from Jordan Latham . We went up the other end and this time a series of poor challenges on michael norton, ending up with the Darwen keeper injuring himself and their No.8 being shown a red card reducing them to 10 men. Darwen still came at us with the 10 men, and just 4 minutes from the break a seemingly clean tackle in the Avro box was judged to be a penalty by the ref to give them the chance of taking the lead. However, justice was done as Jordan Latham pulled off a fine save, diving to his left to keep the score at 1-1. HT : 1-1
The second half saw more of the same, AFC Darwen were very fast on the break with Taylor and Saaed. Danny Grimshaw made way for Ryan Hanson on 57 minutes. and Kane Wallwork again going very close with a shot that just went past the post. A double Avro substitution on 70 minutes with Joe Rathbone and louis Potts coming on for Mike Stockdale and Jake Pollard as we searched to make the breakthrough against the 10 men of Darwen who were working very hard to take the points for themselves. We finally got the break through that we deserved on 78 minutes, when a scramble in the Darwen goal saw Joe Rathbone put us 1-2 ahead. Seven minutes later and Joe had doubled his tally for the game, a great bit of unselfish play from michael norton on the right saw him square the ball for Joe to finish. 1-3. The 90th minute saw us get our 4th goal and put the game to bed, VINNY HOWELL cracked the ball home from the edge of the box with a low, hard shot. 1-4 and that was how the game ended. It was pleasing for us to take the points, given difficult conditions with the weather and going 1-0 down within the first minute. It showed real character from every single player in the team. The SHORN WINES MOTM went to Jordan Latham who saved a penalty and made some crucial stops during the game.
